Ex-Con Who Cheered On Stabbing Of Shirley Corrections Officer Was Arrested In 2017 On Felony Gun Charges, Still Free Despite Prior Conviction For 2011 Stabbing
The fine folks over at Turtleboy Sports published a blog this week about a former inmate at Souza-Baranowski prison in Shirley, who was opining that a corrections officer deserved to be stabbed because he was “disrepekting” the homes of convicted felons by going to work every day.

We’ve been informed that his real name sadly isn’t actually Ckrazy Miller. It’s Joseph Poaletta, and it says a lot about our judicial system that he’s not in prison considering his 2017 felony gun charge in Haverhill.
Police said a 25-year-old man who recently was arrested for the illegal possession of a loaded 9-mm semi-automatic pistol along with a magazine capable of holding 30 rounds did time in state prison for stabbing a man in Newburyport. Joseph Paoletta, a Beverly native with no fixed address, was ordered held without bail during a dangerousness hearing Wednesday in Haverhill District Court, which is temporarily located in Newburyport District Court.
Judge Patricia Dowling found there were “no conditions of release that would reasonably assure the safety of the community,” according to a police report on file in Haverhill District Court. A probable cause hearing was scheduled for Aug. 18.
Police arrested Paoletta on July 5 shortly after 10 p.m. near the Portland Street Playground at 134 Portland St. He was charged with possessing a loaded, unlicensed handgun. Police were patrolling the area where a shooting had occurred on Saturday, July 1 on nearby Cedar Street, injuring two men and sending one to a Boston hospital with serious injuries. Police said the gun was loaded with eight rounds and there was a live round in the chamber of the handgun. According to a police report on file in Haverhill District Court, Poaletta “did not possess nor did he ever possess a valid license to carry.”
Haverhill Detective Lt. Robert Pistone said detectives were in the Acre neighborhood on the night of July 5 when they came across a group of people at the Portland Street Playground, two hours after city parks had closed.
“During their interaction with Paoletta, they discovered he had a loaded handgun and a 30-round magazine,” Pistone said. “There had been a suspected gang-related shooting in that area four days prior, so this was excellent, proactive policing by the officers involved.”
According to the police report, while being questioned, Paoletta told police that he had done time “up state,” which police said was a street term for serving time in a state prison. According to the Newburyport Daily News, on Oct. 27, 2011, Paoletta pleaded guilty in Salem Superior Court to stabbing a Plum Island man in downtown Newburyport in May of that year. Judge Timothy Feeley sentenced Poaletta to four to six years in prison for assault and battery with a dangerous weapon causing significant injury. Poaletta was accused of stabbing Damian Dobson, then 20, during a gang-related altercation that took place on a busy Sunday afternoon on Prince Place, only yards away from dozens of tourists.
While serving his sentence in state prison in Shirley, Poaletta was charged on July 18, 2012, with breaking and entering a building in the nighttime for felony, larceny over $250 and destruction of property. Police said the crimes had occurred on Dec. 9, 2009. No other details were available. Poaletta pleaded guilty to the charges on Oct. 31, 2012, and received an 18-month sentence that ran concurrent with the sentence he was serving at the time for the stabbing incident.
Just to review. This man is a convicted felon with a propensity for violence. He’s active in gangs, and went to prison for stabbing a man in a gang related incident. Since emerging from prison he’s clearly not reformed or rehabilitated in the least bit, hangs out in Haverhill parks where gang shootings happen, and walks around with loaded, unregistered guns.
I’ll tell you what could help protect people from violent felons like him – more gun laws. Obviously people like him respect the law, so they’ll find it nearly impossible to acquire firearms or hurt people without being able to walk into a Walmart and legally purchase a handgun.
Or, stay with me now because this might sound crazy, judges could actually punish people who violate existing gun laws. Especially when they’ve been to prison for stabbing gang members and exclusively post about gangs and the glamorous Haverhill thug life on Facebook. I know, I know, it sounds far fetched. Shouldn’t we be trying to make it harder for law abiding people in Dedham to purchase guns for self defense instead? Usually that’s the line of thinking, but perhaps we should switch it up and see if enforcing existing gun laws could work too. Just a thought.
