Holyoke Veteran’s Home Nurse Posts About Contracting COVID Weeks After Posting Selfie At Crowded Bar During Quarantine

Last week I wrote about Bennett Walsh, the superintendent of the Holyoke Veteran’s Home who is on paid leave after a coronavirus outbreak there claimed the lives of at least six veterans. Governor Baker, who appointed him to the position despite a lack of qualifications, was not alerted until over a week after the first veteran tested positive. People he had come into contact with were not quarantined or tested, and the virus spread to residents and staff. There are now 25 dead veterans, with 18 being confirmed to have tested positive for COVID 19.

It’s not known how the virus got into the facility, and an investigation is ongoing. However, a nurse named Jackie Digris did post this picture on Facebook on March 17.

Just to clarify, she posted the picture on Tuesday March 17, but it says Sunday Funday, which indicates it was Sunday March 15. At that point bars were still allowed to be opened, although many had closed. The NBA suspended its season on March 11. Everyone knew the seriousness of the disease by March 15, and people who work in old folks homes should’ve used more caution than anyone.

There is no evidence that this woman contracted the disease and brought it into the facility, but it’s certainly not a good look. The quarantines had begun by March 17, and for a nurse not to have the sensibility to realize what an egregiously horrible look that would be, is concerning. I’ve done my part and stayed home, as have millions of other people who lost their jobs and businesses. And while doing that it seems like many of the people who still have jobs and lectured us all about staying home, weren’t practicing what they preached.
