This is one of the most disturbing stories I’ve ever read about animal cruelty, and it comes out of a place where you’d least expect something like this to happen.
WHDH: A Melrose man is facing animal cruelty charges after allegedly killing his dog in the backyard of his home Friday night, police say. Officers responding to a report of animal cruelty on Mount Zion Road on Saturday learned that a neighbor, later identified as 44-year-old Adam Crook, allegedly dragged his dog from his home into the backyard, where he then struck the dog in the head with a large rock multiple times, killing it, then took a shovel from his home and buried it. Police executed a search warrant to locate and exhume the dog from the grave.
“This suspect’s alleged actions are absolutely reprehensible and inexcusable,” Melrose Police Chief Michael Lyle said. “I’m grateful for the excellent investigative work of Melrose Police Sgt. Brian Ladner, Detective Sgt. Paul McNamara, Officer Pamela Daye, and Lt. Alan Borgal of the Animal Rescue League that resulted in this arrest.”
“It’s reprehensible, inexcusable on so many levels,” said Mike Defina of the Animal Rescue League. “This really callous and cruel act of violence against a defenseless animal does not go unanswered, that is the priority of the investigation right now,”
Crook was arrested without incident on Sunday and subsequently released on his personal recognizance. He is expected to be arraigned Nov. 26 in the Malden District Court.
Like NSTB said, it’s hard to have a hot take on this one. We can all universally agree that this man is horrible, twisted, demented, and a psychopath. People do treat dogs like this go on to treat humans like this.
However, there is a twist to this story that makes it even more insane, and I’m not sure why the media isn’t reporting on it. According to several people in the comments Adam Crook is or was a teacher.
The story checks out. According to their website, Adam Crook is or was a 6th grade science teacher at McCall Middle School in Winchester up until at least 2018.
His classroom website is still archived here. How does a lunatic like this become a teacher in a town like Winchester? It doesn’t exactly sound like he was keeping a low profile there either. How do you sneak through the cracks like that? The answer is simple – he teachers science. Science is by far the easiest subject to find a teaching job in. When I applied to be a History teacher there were close to 100 applicants for the job. For science, it’s like a revolving door. There are a lot of great science teachers in the public schools, but there’s also a real shortage of them.
His father David complained in 2014 that Adam Crook was “falsely accused” by his ex-wife of assault in their ongoing custody dispute.
Adam chimed in to thank his father.
I wasn’t there for whatever allegedly happened, but I’m inclined to believe that the guy who murdered his dog with a rock and buried the corpse in the backyard is certainly capable of assault and battery during a contentious breakup. It seems further validated based on the comments above on Masslive.
Here’s an idea Dave probably hasn’t considered – his son is a monster. He likely got this way because his parents enabled him, blamed his victims, and made a litany of excuses from when he was a kid all the way into adulthood.
All the other guys who didn’t get off the hook were jealous of Adam’s victory in court.
Dad also appears to have worked for a law firm in Maine.
But he’s still trying to figure out how to use this gosh darn Facebook machine!
OK, it’s hard to be mad at him. But his son is human garbage, and I hope he rots for what he did to that poor dog.
