The Fact That The Mainstream Media Thought Ricky Gervais’ Golden Globes Monologue Wasn’t Funny Is Exactly Why It Was So Necessary
I’ve long thought that Ricky Gervais is one of the funniest and most interesting people on the planet. I’ve listened to his podcasts with Sam Harris, watched his standup, I agree with a lot of things he has to say, and he’s the architect of the greatest sitcom in American history (The Office). I’ve always liked liberals like him, Bill Maher, and Louis CK, because they are the closest thing we have today to George Carlin. Gervais might be a liberal atheist Brit, and I might be an American Christian conservative, but we unite as one on our hatred of cancel culture. That’s what woke culture does – it unifies reasonable people of different political creeds around the one thing we all despise – virtue signaling social justice queefs.
Gervais’ complete annihilation of the Hollywood elite and their faux social justice activism in his Golden Globes monologue was the most discussed topic in the world on Monday, and was one of the greatest speeches I’ve ever heard. Watch if if you haven’t already, especially the last minute.
Truer words have never been spoken:
Apple roared into the TV game with The Morning Show, a superb drama about the importance of dignity and doing the right thing, made by a company that runs sweatshops in China. Well, you say you’re woke but the companies you work for in China — unbelievable. Apple, Amazon, Disney. If ISIS started a streaming service you’d call your agent, wouldn’t you?
So if you do win an award tonight, don’t use it as a platform to make a political speech. You’re in no position to lecture the public about anything. You know nothing about the real world. Most of you spent less time in school than Greta Thunberg.
So if you win, come up, accept your little award, thank your agent, and your God and fuck off, OK? It’s already three hours long. Right, let’s do the first award.
The faces were so priceless.
They all thought it was funny and knew it was true, but they didn’t want to be seen laughing at a joke that 99% of the world laughed at because it was so true. These people are much more comfortable laughing at recycled humor that revolves around the same punchline – orange man bad. Because nothing is less controversial than taking shots at Donald Trump. It’s why Steven Colbert, Samantha Bee, Chelsea Handler, and Seth Meyers are a thing.
Truer works have never been spoken. No one has ever cared about what a celebrity has thought about anything. They all think exactly alike and are under the impression that they matter. Yet not a single person has ever woke up and said, “Ya know, I don’t really have a strong opinion about climate change, so I’ll wait to hear what Meryl Streep has to say about it at the Golden Globes.” We’re talking about an almost entirely rich white audience, lecturing working class Americans about racism and climate change after leaving their entirely white neighborhoods to fly there on private jets. Thank you Ricky Gervais for saying what the rest of us were thinking.
Everyone who is fun, cool, or has a sense of humor thought that monologue was great. I would estimate it to be around 99% of the population. But the mainstream media is controlled by the 1% of humorless fartboxes who get to decide what is and isn’t news. Shockingly they did not approve, as can be seen by this Washington Post headline, the same newspaper that recently called a dead terrorist an “austere religious scholar.”
“Nobody cared.”
Sure, it was only the most talked about topic all over the world, but the Washington Post thinks no one cared. Because in their bubble, no one did. I’m sure the Post’s headline had nothing to do with the fact that they’re owned by Jeff Bezos, and Amazon was the butt of one of his best jokes.
Blue checkmarks bemoaned his attacks on “marginalized” people.
Yes, rich white celebrities in tuxedos and $50,000 dresses drinking Moet are the real victims here. We’ve marginalized these people to mansions in Beverly Hills.
Perhaps the hottest take came from Lorraine Ali of the Los Angeles Times.
As you can see, she didn’t appreciate the fact that Ricky Gervais had the audacity to verbalize what most rational people were thinking. This is a woman who has likely ruined every dinner party she’s ever attended because here entire world revolves around politics. I don’t care if you’re right or left, but if you if you constantly post about politics you’re a miserable drip I don’t want to be around.
Let’s see what she had to say in her column.
The 58-year-old former Golden Globe winner (“The Office”) and five-time host also flippantly reminded the packed room, “No one cares about movies anymore,” and advised, “If you do win an award tonight, don’t use it as a platform to make a political speech. You’re in no position to lecture the public about anything. You know nothing about the real world.”
Meryl Streep shook her head.
Stop the fight! Meryl Streep didn’t think a joke that accurately satirized how little people care about her misguided world view was funny. Meryl Streep is living in the real world, the rest of you peons are not.
But at the Beverly Hilton, where the three-hour-plus ceremony took place, the mood was already sober thanks to an impeachment, the threat of war with Iran and devastating bush fires in Australia.
How out of touch do you have to be to think that 320 million Americans are sitting in their homes worrying about impeachment, war with Iran, and fires in Australia?
- The only people who are about impeachment are talking heads on social media who live in a political bubble and watch cable news 24/7. You either like Trump or you don’t, but no one’s losing any sleep over the meaningless, predetermined vote to impeach him.
- The United States is not at war with Iran, nor will we be. Trump killed a terrorist who orchestrated an attack on our embassy. He knows that war is unpopular and could derail his reelection campaign, which is why he would never do that. The fact that Hollywood actors pretend that we are on our way to war only proves Ricky’s point that they are out of touch elitists who are paid to dramatize everything.
- The Australian fires are the result of arson and the fact that it’s summer there. Over 20 people have already been arrested for intentionally starting fires and nearly 200 face legal action.
There is nothing particularly special or tumultuous about this date in history. The Golden Globes could have been on any date ever, and Hollywood would take whatever the political cause of the day was and pretend that it was the end of the world. These people are paid to be dramatic.
The last thing anyone needed was for the smirking master of ceremonies to reprimand them for having hope, or taunt the room for trying to use their influence to change things for the better.
Actually, that’s exactly what they needed – to be mocked by one of their own. Every single person in that room voted for and donated to Hillary Clinton, and she lost. That about sums up the “influence” their opinions have.
Patricia Arquette, a winner for “The Act,” noted that “the continent of Australia is on fire” within a speech condemning President Trump’s recent targeted killing of Iran’s Gen. Qassem Suleimani, while “Fosse/Verdon” winner Michelle Williams used her acceptance speech to defend abortion rights.
In other words, they did exactly what he knew they would do and mocked them ahead of time for.
The Golden Globes were criticized for lacking diversity in their nominations, from the relative dearth of people of color in the performance categories to the total exclusion of female directors. Gervais joked about the lack of representation by explaining, quite simply, that the Golden Globes voting body, the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn., is “racist.” The harsh joke landed better than most of his wisecracks. It seemed to show that Gervais might care, at least a bit, about a larger injustice in the industry.
Translation – in Lorraine Ali’s world the best joke of the night is the one where he called white people racist.
The commentary would have meant far more if Gervais himself had been brave enough to drop the tired agitator shtick and, for once, read the room.
Or, instead of reading the room, he could read the world. Because no one in that room bears any resemblance to reality.
Don’t worry though, Lorraine’s blue checkmark friends agreed that funny jokes aren’t actually funny.
Hanging out with Julia Turner and Matt Brennan is probably about as fun a being Momma June’s pre-op leggings caught in a bad camel toe.
These people are being ratioed harder on Twitter than I’ve ever seen. A normal person reflects on this and asks themselves, “could I possibly be wrong?” But the American media is comprised of the most self-important elitists on the planet, so they are incapable of that. They truly believe that they are enlightened and the masses just haven’t caught up with the times. Everything they say and do just proves Ricky Gervais’ point for him.
