Warren Cop The Town Rallied Around After Getting Fired For Harmless Arrested For Handcuffing And Detaining Drunk Girlfriend On Duty

Two years ago we published a blog defending a Warren police officer named Shawn Morin who was fired by what appeared to be a vindictive Selectmen due to an “offensive” meme he posted on Facebook.

Officer Morin was well liked, the town rallied around him, and he was reinstated. But it looks like he might not be such a nice guy after all.

A Warren police officer has been charged with assault and battery against his girlfriend after he handcuffed her and placed the woman in the backseat of his cruiser because he did not like that she had been drinking alcohol and smoking. The incident occurred Sunday when Massachusetts State Police arrested and placed Police Officer Shawn Morin, 35, in custody, The Telegram & Gazette reported after reviewing court records.

The woman was at a neighbor’s house on East Street in Warren. Massachusetts State Police Sgt. Thomas Eliason went to the address and met with troopers who were already at the scene. A woman told investigators she was involved in a “physical altercation” with her boyfriend, identified by her as Morin. The altercation happened at their residence in Warren. Morin was on-duty at the time. The woman told state police she was home and entertaining two friends when Morin stopped to visit while on duty sometime around 7 p.m. The woman said she had been drinking a few bottles of nips and smoked a cigarette, which she stated, “Morin doesn’t allow her to do.”

The girlfriend said, “Morin was enraged and aggressively put her in handcuffs and forced her into his Warren PD cruiser,” the state police report said. The girlfriend began kicking the plexiglass in the cruiser, hoping Morin would let her out. Morin, according to the girlfriend’s report to state police, took her out of the cruiser and put her on the ground in the front yard. The officer removed the handcuffs and let her go back inside their home. Morin took her cell phone, state police said. The girlfriend told investigators Morin stopped her from leaving the residence, but she escaped from the basement and ran to a neighbor’s home, according to court records. The girlfriend showed state police troopers a bruise on her right arm.

Well, that’s not good. I still stand by the original blog because no one should be fired over a meme, but you can’t explain your way out of handcuffing your girlfriend and putting her in your police car while you’re on duty. The fact that she’s the drunk one and he’s the one making the bad decisions is pretty sad.

However, one thing Kate Peter has taught me is that there are two sides to every story when it comes to drunk girlfriends who claim to be the victims of abuse. The solution to a drunken, drama magnet of a girlfriend is simple – dump them. Don’t tell them to stop smoking or pounding Henny. Don’t get caught up in their insanity or drama. This is just who they are. The best thing you can do is leave them, never come back, and find a normal girlfriend. If you stay with someone like this then you get what’s coming to you. Here’s his side.

Morin told state police he found his girlfriend at a different neighbor’s home while he was on duty. The officer told investigators that his girlfriend is an alcoholic and is violent while drinking, the sergeant wrote in his report. According to Morin, the neighbor did not want the girlfriend at their home, and he attempted to get her to leave. Morin said his girlfriend attempted to bite him, so he handcuffed her and put her in his cruiser.

“Morin stated he was attempting to place her in protective custody but admitted he never called in any of his actions to dispatch,” state police wrote. “He stated that when she began to kick his cruiser windows, he released her and removed the handcuffs.”Morin was then arrested on the domestic assault and battery charge.

Again, stop trying to save drunk chicks from themselves. I know it’s Warren and there’s probably not much going on, but maybe let another cop deal with her if she’s out of control.

According to witness testimony it sounds like the girlfriend should be arrested too.

A witness told state police that Morin’s girlfriend called him the day of the alleged incident. Morin’s girlfriend told the man she was drunk and wanted to make sure her children were properly supervised, according to a witness statement filed in court. The man and his wife drove to the home of Morin’s girlfriend in Warren. The witness told state police the girlfriend kept texting Morin while he was on duty until Morin drove to the home. The witness believed the girlfriend was “intentionally attempting to agitate Morin by threatening to text Morin’s ex-wife,” according to a statement on file in court. The witness said Morin took his girlfriend’s cell phone after she refused to give it to him. The girlfriend tried to bite Morin and he then “forcefully restrained her in handcuffs,” the witness told state police.

How do you try to bite someone and not get arrested for it? Better question – what kind of mother is piss drunk during the middle of the day starting fights with her cop boyfriend?

But again, he’s a police officer and he shouldn’t be in this situation to begin with. Regardless of what she did he handled it wrongly, and considering he recently got his job back after so many people went to bat for him, he should be more careful than anyone to follow the rules. At this point with the meme and now this incident it’s pretty clear that Officer Morin’s decision making skills prevent him from being a good cop moving forward.
