Turtleboy Defense Team Adds Attorney Jeffrey Pyle For Civil Defense Case Against The McAlberts

Breaking: I have retained Attorney Jeffrey Pyle, a partner at Prince Lobel LLP, who will be taking the lead on my civil case, along with 2 associates.
Jeff Pyle has been practicing law for 25 years, but his commitment to the First Amendment goes all the way back to high school. When he was a high school senior in South Hadley, he wore a T-shirt to gym class that said, “Coed Naked Band: Do it to the Rhythm.” The school censored his T-shirt under a dress code banning “demeaning” and “vulgar” speech. So, Jeff wore more T-shirts, such as “Coed Naked Civil Liberties: Do It to the Amendments” and “Coed Naked Censorship: They Do it in South Hadley.” When the school didn’t back down, he and his brother sued, and they won. In 1996, the Supreme Judicial Court agreed with Jeff that under Massachusetts law, high school students have the right to wear vulgar, non-disruptive messages on clothing to school. And that is still good law today.
After going to law school and completing a federal clerkship, Jeff became a First Amendment lawyer. A big part of his practice is defending defamation cases. He also sues the government for public records, and files motions to unseal court records. A few highlights:
- Jeff defended the blog Techdirt when it was sued by Shiva Ayyadurai for making fun of his claim that he invented e-mail. The court dismissed the case. https://www.techdirt.com/2017/09/06/case-dismissed-judge-throws-out-shiva-ayyadurais-defamation-lawsuit-against-techdirt/
- Jeff defended the bloggers known as “Data Colada” when they were sued for defamation for writing about potential data fraud by Harvard Business School professor Francesca Gino. The court dismissed the case. https://www.newyorker.com/news/news-desk/how-a-scientific-dispute-spiralled-into-a-defamation-lawsuit
- In 2019, Jeff filed a successful motion to unseal the Commonwealth’s lawsuit against Purdue Pharma on behalf of the New York Times, the Boston Globe, and other media entities: https://www.bostonglobe.com/metro/2019/01/25/parents-overdose-victims-protest-oxycontin-maker-court-hearing/LiAU1Bpt1cA9Lvh8L4SekL/story.html
- He successfully sued the City of Worcester for public records about police misconduct investigations on behalf of the Worcester Telegram & Gazette, resulting in the first-ever punitive damages award against a city under the state public records law: https://andrewqmr.substack.com/p/worcesters-wasteful-never-ending
Jeff will be joined by my criminal defense Attorneys Tim Bradl and Mark Bederow, both of whom are very familiar with the facts of both my case and Karen Read’s. I look forward to vigorously defending all of our First Amendment rights in court. Karen Read did not kill John O’Keefe. Other people did. Together this triumvirate of legal talent will prove this were it matters most – inside a courtroom. Buckle up because the fight has just begun.
