Canton Coverup Part 549: The Complete Timeline Of How Lucky Loughran Helped Free Karen Read

There’s a lot of misinformation out there about who found Lucky Loughran, how he became a critical defense witness for Karen Read, and whether or not I intimidated him into lying for Read at her trials.

What no one can deny is that his testimony was extremely damaging to the Commonwealth’s case because he said that John O’Keefe’s body wasn’t on Brian Albert’s lawn at 2:30, despite their allegation that Karen Read had struck him and left him there to die at 12:30. He also gave critical insight into who killed John O’Keefe when he testified that he saw a Ford Edge parked where John’s body was found at 3 AM, and both Colin and Brian Albert drove a Ford Edge at that time. If this were a real murder investigation and not a coverup, then investigators would’ve tracked down and interviewed Loughran early on and followed up on any leads he gave them.

They also would’ve diverted resources into finding out who was driving that Ford Edge, since they were allegedly parked directly next to where the State Police claim a Boston Police officer, who they claim was hit by a motor vehicle, was dying in the snow for at least an hour.

Whoever was driving that Ford Edge either was involved in killing John O’Keefe, or could give critical testimony that a body was there, since no other witness testified to seeing a body. Not speaking with Loughran was intentional, because investigators knew that his testimony would exonerate Karen Read. Ultimately in both trials he told the truth and played a central role in Read’s acquittal, but getting there was no easy road. In order to clear up all the misinformation out there I decided to put together a Lucky Loughran timeline.

2/2/22

  • Karen Read arrested

2/3/22

  • Michael Proctor interviews Canton DPW Director Michael Trotta and quotes Trotta as saying Canton DPW does not plow Fairview Road

2/15/22

  • Privatie Investigator Paul Mackowski speaks with Highway Department Supervisor Billy Walsh who tells him Lucky Loughran plowed Fairview Road 1/29/22
  • Loughran speaks with Mackowski, tells him no body on the front lawn at 2:30, “without equivocation” he would’ve seen a body if one was there, and saw a Ford Edge “or something similar” from Cedercrest at 3:30 in exact location John’s body was found, took Loughran to parking lot where LUCKY picked out a Ford Edge and said “it looked like that”, and did not return to Fairview until 6:30

3/27/22

  • Lucky is supposed to meet up with Mackowski and Yannetti but doesn’t show up for meeting and they don’t hear from him again
  • Read team assumes Loughran has been intimidated into silence by the McAlberts and the Canton DPW since he has lived in Canton his whole life and knows Chris very well
  • From this point forward the Read defense teams assumes Loughran will be a hostile witness who has been intimidated into not telling the truth after it was discovered he spoke with Mackowski

4/3/23

  • Chris Albert comments on a post about Lucky’s wife going to hospice care and offers to bring Loughran’s family food

4/18/23

  • I write Part 1 of Canton Coverup series with zero knowledge that Lucky Loughran plowed Fairview Road
  • I was fully convinced of Karen Read’s innocence on 4/18/23, but if I knew about what Lucky had seen my belief in her innocence would’ve been even stronger

5/1/23

  • Chris Albert heart reacts to Lucky’s Facebook post announcing his wife has died

5/23 (unknown exact date, but Trial 1 cross examination with Lally says it happened in May 2023)

  • Lucky is approached by the FBI and asked about what he saw on 1/29/22
  • FBI transcript quotes Lucky as saying he first drove by Fairview Road between 1:30 and 2, which Lally pounces on in cross examination in an attempt to discredit his testimony

5/7/23

  • Because I had no knowledge that Lucky Loughran plowed Fairview Road and didn’t see a body at 2:30 AM, I was always under the assumption that John’s body was placed outside after Karen Read left at 12:30 AM, and that Jen McCabe Googled “hos long to die in cold” at 2:27 AM because she knew he was outside dying in the cold and wanted to know if he would be alive when his body was discovered in the morning
  • Karen was well aware of what Lucky had told Mackowski on 2/15/22 but couldn’t tell me about it because the report was not public and publishing it would be evidence that she was giving me non-public, non-impounded information
  • Karen attempted to point me in the right direction of Lucky so that I could find him on my own by dropping several hints and riddles in text messages about who would’ve driven down Fairview Road that night, and telling me she had another witness who said there wasn’t a body there at 2:30 AM
  • This confused me because up until that time I assumed the body was placed there when Karen left at 12:30, and that Jen McCabe Google “hos long to die in cold” at 2:27 because she knew John was dying in the cold
  • I wrongly told Karen that if she had a witness who didn’t see a body there at 2:30 AM then Jen McCabe’s 2:27 Google search didn’t make sense
  • Karen corrected me and pointed out that Jen searched that at 2:27 because they were going to leave his body outside but hadn’t done it yet, and that when she found John’s body he was not dead and was still warm to the touch
  • I wrongly guessed that her unknown witness was Ken Berkowitz or Tom Beatty, and grew frustrated with the riddles and sending messages through a 3rd party (Natalie)
  • Karen was nervous about speaking with me directly but finally agreed to talk to me for the first time on the phone that night, she told me all about Lucky Loughran, but she said that I could not report on this unless I found Lucky on my own and interviewed him

6/3/23

  • For the first time I hint to my viewers on my show that someone plowed the road that night and didn’t see a body, but that they were scared of the McAlberts and were refusing to testify
  • I reassured this person, who I called “Mr. Lucky,” that he should not fear the McAlberts and that they feared me because the information I was exposing on them could land them in federal prison
  • I believed at the time that Lucky was avoiding Read’s private investigator because he had been intimidated by the McAlberts from telling the truth, and I wanted to make it clear that we were no longer going to remain silent as they intimidated witnesses
  • I assumed that fear of Brian Albert was what was preventing Lucky from cooperating with the Read defense team, and said on my show that Brian Albert was going to find out that both Lucky and Steve Scanlon had spoken with Karen Read’s defense team one way or another, so he might as well tell the truth or else I’d tell the truth about what he told Mackowski
  • Hank Brennan later referred to this episode when he cross examined Lucky, and suggested that Lucky was lying about what he had seen that night because I had intimidated him into changing his testimony

6/4/23

  • I reached out to Lucky Loughran and he said he was not answering any questions “anymore”, likely in reference to the FBI speaking with him one month prior
  • I recognized that Lucky’s wife had died 5 weeks prior and did not message him or bother him again
  • I never threatened or intimidated Lucky in the Facebook DM, but rather said I would protect his name from being made public since I believed he was scared of the McAlberts

6/27/24

  • I realized that Loughran’s testimony would be a huge story that the public should know about, but my source (Karen Read) had given me this information off the record and I couldn’t publish Mackowski’s report about his interview with Lucky
  • I knew that the only way I could report on this was to do what Mackowski had done – find DPW Director Michael Trotta, interview him directly, get him to confirm that Loughran plowed Fairview Road on 1/29/22, and then track down and speak with Lucky directly
  • I traveled to Canton and interviewed Trotta, who confirmed to me that Proctor had lied about what Trotta had told him on 2/3/22 when he quoted Trotta as saying that no one from the Canton DPW plowed Fairview Road that morning

8/7/23

  • After being contacted by a family member of Lucky Loughran who told me he would be amendable to speaking with me, I got his phone number, called him, spoke with him for 5 minutes, and found out new information that Karen Read’s team didn’t know – Lucky had been approached by and spoke with the FBI in May 2023, and that they told him they had GPS data from his truck showing that he had plowed Fairview Road
  • Lucky told me that he was willing to speak with Karen Read’s attorneys and would tell them the truth if they reached out to him after they had given up hope that he would be a witness for her
  • Lucky told me it was a Ford Edge parked next to the body, but it wasn’t Brian Albert’s Ford Edge
  • That night I did an impromptu live stream while on vacation and mentioned my conversation with Lucky at the 11:12 mark:

8/8/23

  • I published Canton Coverup Part 93 interview with Lucky Loughran and transcribed my brief conversation with Lucky
  • This story was huge news, but Lucky called me in a panic telling me he was going to get fired for speaking with me
  • I did a show that night, and in order to make Lucky feel safe I did a rant about how we weren’t going to let Lucky’s bosses retaliate against him by vowing to hold massive protests if they reprimanded him – the opposite of Hank Brennan later accused me of doing to Lucky

8/10/23

  • After intentionally avoiding speaking with him for 18 months, Proctor and Bukhenik interviewed Lucky because they had no choice due to the exposure of my story
  • The purpose of the interview wasn’t to hear more about the explosive tip about the Ford Edge, but rather to, 1) find ways to discredit Lucky’s story because it was problematic for convicting Karen Read, 2) convince Lucky he was a victim of me wiretapping him, 3) go through Lucky’s phone to find more information about me, 4) find out more about the FBI investigation into them
  • Their goal was to focus on having Lucky find “discrepancies” between what I published and what he told me, in order to discredit my reporting and discredit Lucky’s story
  • One of the minor “discrepancies” was that I reported the FBI drove Lucky around, which Lucky admits never happened. But the problem is that I never quoted Lucky as saying that, so the discrepancy didn’t exist. Bukhenik and Proctor knew that I never quoted him as saying this, since they had a printout of my interview with them at the interrogation.
  • Another “discrepancy” is that I reported that Lucky was confronted with GPS data by the FBI, which Bukhenik and Proctor pounced on to discredit me. The problem is that I never quoted Lucky as saying this in my article. I quoted Lucky as saying that the FBI told him they had GPS data, not that they confronted him with GPS data. None of this changed the fact that he saw a Ford Edge parked there. They knew this discrepancy didn’t exist because they had the printouts of the articles in front of them, but instead of correcting him they used it as a way to discredit all of my reporting so that they wouldn’t have to investigate the Ford Edge.

8/21/23

  • I report that Colin Albert also drives a Ford Edge after obtaining police report from Bridgewater State College showing Colin was pulled over in that vehicle one year prior.

September 8, 2023

  • Transcript of Lucky’s interview with State Police is made public and I publish Canton Coverup Part 139 about it
  • Morrissey sends text in group chat to Proctor, Bukhenik and Tully, telling them they dropped the ball
  • Bukhenik responds to Morrissey by complaining about minor inaccuracy that Lucky was interviewed at NCDAO instead of Canton DPW

September 9, 2023

  • I text David Yannetti to tell him I can’t believe they had no interest in the Ford Edge and were only interested in Turtleboy, Yannetti says “these bastards” deserved all the scorn the defense was giving them
  • The McAlberts and Commonwealth later cite Yannetti’s text to me in court filings, and intentionally mislead the court by claiming that “these bastards” were the McAlberts, not the state police

9/15/23

  • I confront Yuri Bukhenik outside court and ask him why he’s not looking into the Ford Edge tip and was instead focusing on nailing me for wiretapping. They later present this video to a grand jury to indict me for intimidating Bukhenik.

10/11/23

  • I am arrested for witness intimidation. While being booked by Brian Tully I attempt to ask him about why he hasn’t investigated the tip about the Ford Edge, but he doesn’t answer. While being brought into court in Stoughton in handcuffs I yell out that I hope they spend as much time looking into who was driving the Ford Edge seen next to where John O’Keefe’s dead body was later found, as they spent looking into me.

6/13/24

  • Tully testifies on cross examination that he didn’t investigate Lucky’s tip about the Ford Edge and not seeing a body on Brian Albert’s front lawn at 2:30 because he claims Lucky’s story changed over time, that he was too far away when he saw the Ford Edge, and that Lucky’s identification of the Ford Edge when he was with Mackowski was “highly suggestive.”
  • Tully admits that he had no idea that Brian and Colin Albert owned a Ford Edge, and didn’t look to see who in Canton area owned a Ford Edge because he determined nothing Lucky said was credible
  • Tully says the purpose of interviewing Lucky was to investigate his reliability, not the things that he saw on 1/29/22. No such investigation took place into the reliability of any of the witnesses who gave testimony that was damaging to Karen Read.
  • On re-direct Tully says that Lucky’s eye witness testimony was not credible because his story about the Ford Edge changed, he was color blind, he saw the Ford Edge from Cedercrest Road, he was operating a larger motor vehicle, and that Lucky said that the Canton Police were there at 4 AM when they didn’t get there until 6 AM
  • Tully said that Mackowski’s questions were “suggestive” about the Ford Edge because Mackowski went into a parking lot, pointed at a Ford Edge, and said “is that it?”
  • This excuse as to why he didn’t find Lucky credible was not true. Lucky never said he saw the police there at 4 AM. Mackowski’s report says he saw the Ford Edge there at 4 AM. Mackowski also didn’t point out a Ford Edge and ask Lucky if it looked like that. It was Lucky who told him it was a Ford Edge, and then they went into a parking lot and Lucky picked out a Ford Edge, and said “it looked like that.” Mackowski never pointed to a Ford Edge and said, “is that it” as Tully claimed he did.

6/22/24

  • Now that he felt safe and his job is secure, Lucky testifies to everything he told Mackowski, the FBI, and Turtleboy, without fear of retribution
  • Lucky testifies on cross examination that he knows the difference between a Ford Edge and a Jeep Cherokee, after Lally attempts to discredit him
  • In an attempt to discredit all of his testimony Lally focuses on slight inaccuracies of time that he told the FBI that he saw the Ford Edge at 1:30 or 2 AM, and that the Brian Albert’s house was blocked off by first responders at 5 AM, but none of this changes the fact that he didn’t see a body on the lawn at 2:30 AM
  • Lucky says that there is no way the car he saw was a Black Lexus SUV after Lally attempts to create possibility that he saw Karen Read returning to the scene at 5 AM
  • Lally attempts to discredit Lucky by bringing up the basketball hoop that Lucky admitted to dinging on 1/29/22

6/4/25

  • Hank Brennan uses different tactic than Lally to discredit Loughran’s testimony by trying to get Lucky to admit that he was testifying that there was no body on the front lawn and that he saw a Ford Edge, because he was intimidated by Turtleboy. Lucky repeatedly denies he was intimidated into giving the testimony he did.
  • Hank tries to get Lucky to accuse me of wiretapping him by suggesting that Lucky found out I had recorded him illegally, which he also denies.
  • Hank blatantly ignored 8/8/23 Turtleboy Live Show in which I tell the McAlberts and Canton DPW to stop intimidating Lucky, and let him tell the truth.
  • Outside of court the media asks me if I threatened Lucky Loughran and I made it clear this was a baseless lie. I also point out the much bigger issue the media should be focusing on – why did I track down and find a critical eye witness before the State Police did?

The people who want Karen Read in jail suggest that Lucky lied about what he saw because I intimidated him. Supporters of Karen Read who don’t like Turtleboy claim that my reporting on Lucky didn’t matter, since Karen Read’s private investigator had “found” him first. But the fact of the matter is that prior to my involvement in this story, Lucky Loughran was intimidated by the McAlberts, and was not cooperating with the defense. I never threatened Lucky, but rather I made him feel safe and supported. Had I not done that the Read team likely would not have called him as a witness. Had I not tracked him down on my own (because I couldn’t report on Karen Read’s off the record tip) then the public would not have known about what he had seen. What no one can debate is that Lucky’s testimony was crucial for exonerating Karen Read, because he was credible, he had no reason to lie to help Karen Read, and every reason to lie to protect the McAlberts. He did the right thing, and turtle riders will forever be grateful for his help in freeing an innocent woman.
