Masslive: Police continue to investigate a Saturday morning pedestrian accident in Worcester where a man crossed a busy intersection against the green light and was struck by a car. Video shows the man crossing at the intersection of Main and Chandler streets around 8:10 a.m. Saturday. The man is in a crosswalk but was crossing as the light was green, according to police and the video. Cars are seen driving through the intersection as the man crosses.
The man crossed in front of cars waiting to take a left-hand turn and then continued walking. He is then struck by a Toyota Corolla heading eastbound on Chandler Street.
“At the intersection of Main St., a male crossed Chandler St. against the green light,” police said. “The operator of the vehicle did not see him and struck him with the vehicle.”
As of Sunday night, no one was criminally charged as the investigation continues. Police were called to the scene and found the man in the road. Paramedics treated the man at the scene and took him to a nearby hospital. The man is expected to survive, according to police.
You hate to see it, but that was a long time coming. Anyone forced to commute from 290 to the west side has had to go through this intersection, and has likely missed a green light because somebody who decided that jaywalking laws don’t apply to them walked in front of traffic and expected everyone to stop for them. It’s the gateway between downtown and Main South and every day it’s like the zombie apocalypse at that intersection. Couple that with the fact that going east in the morning the sun is directly in your eyes and I’m surprised this doesn’t happen more often.
The only victim here was the person in the Corolla who had the misfortune of being late to wherever they were going. Stop walking in the middle of traffic and you’ll stop getting hit by cars. Darwinism 101.
